Anti-Sweat (Hyperhidrosis) Treatment with Botox® in Bonn

Anti-sweat treatment in Bonn – treating hyperhidrosis with botulinum toxin

Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) is more than just unpleasant – it can seriously limit quality of life. When deodorants and antiperspirants are no longer enough, treatment with botulinum toxin offers a highly effective solution. The active substance specifically blocks the nerve impulses to the sweat glands and reduces sweat production by up to 80–90%.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is the term used when the body produces significantly more sweat than is needed for temperature regulation. Those affected sweat regardless of heat or physical effort – often in social situations, at work or in everyday life. The most commonly affected areas are:

  • Armpits: the most common treatment area – wet patches on clothing
  • Hands: damp hands when shaking hands or writing
  • Feet: excessive foot sweating with odour
  • Forehead: beads of sweat on the face without physical exertion

How does botulinum toxin work against sweating?

Botulinum toxin is injected in minimal doses directly into the affected areas of skin. There it blocks signal transmission from the nerve to the sweat gland. The sweat glands are temporarily shut down – without affecting the body's overall temperature regulation, as only a small proportion of the sweat glands is involved.

How the anti-sweat treatment works

In our practice in Bonn-Bad Godesberg at Theaterplatz we first take a medical history and assess the severity of the hyperhidrosis. The treatment area is then marked and, optionally, the active sweat glands are visualised with an iodine-starch test. The botulinum toxin is then injected into the skin with fine needles in a grid pattern. The treatment takes about 20–30 minutes.

Results and durability

The effect sets in after 3–7 days and reaches its maximum after about 2 weeks. The reduction in sweating lasts 4–9 months – often even longer with repeated treatment. Many patients report an enormous improvement in their quality of life and more self-confidence in everyday life.

Frequently asked questions about Anti-Sweat (Hyperhidrosis) Treatment with Botox®

How does Botox® work against excessive sweating?

Botox® blocks the nerve impulses to the sweat glands and can thus reduce sweat production by up to 80–90% in clinical studies. The treatment is very effective and long-lasting.

How long does the effect last in hyperhidrosis?

The sweat-reducing effect usually lasts 6–12 months. Many patients report an effect lasting 9–10 months before a refresher is necessary.

Which areas can be treated for hyperhidrosis?

The armpits are treated most often. Hands, feet and the forehead can also be treated successfully for excessive sweating.

What risks does treatment against sweating with botulinum toxin carry?

Botulinum toxin has been used against heavy sweating for many years and is expressly approved for the armpits. It acts only where it is injected; the body's temperature regulation remains intact. Possible are small bruises at the injection sites and, in the hands, slightly less strength in the fingers for a few weeks. The physician informs you about risks and contraindications before the treatment.

What does a hyperhidrosis treatment cost?

The cost of an armpit treatment starts €350. The exact cost depends on the treated area and the amount needed.

Is the anti-sweat treatment painful?

The injections are well tolerated thanks to fine needles. For sensitive areas such as the hands, local anaesthesia can be used.

Does health insurance cover the costs?

For diagnosed hyperhidrosis some private health insurers cover the costs. Statutory insurers generally do not reimburse. We will gladly issue you an invoice for your insurer.
